Let’s catch up with Aariz :

  1. How is it like being a stand-up comedian?

It’s like living a dream!

kidding..life main bahot struggle hai par life funny hai.

  1. What made you choose this field? Is there anyone who has influenced you?

I always wanted to learn guitar since I was 10, started learning it at the age of 16 and formed my first band when I was 18. Been a performer since then in college and outside. Later that little bug in me for comedy started to rise and I started doing open mics and was already doing video editing since college. I started practicing both by making funny videos and doing open mic shows with The Comedy Factory.

  1. Do you write your own routines or you directly perform onstage?

Some thoughts I already have in my mind and most of it is clicking on stage. It’s a process of trial and errors. As a matter of fact, I am answering this question right after an open mic I hosted in Surat tonight. Some really funny situations I build during crowd interaction today which is spontaneous ofcourse. You don’t know who’s coming to your show.

So that’s how we keep doing gigs and keep warming up. Travel 100 and sometimes even 400 (mumbai) kms just to do a 5 min spot on stage in front of a good crowd.

  1. We have also heard that you’re a musician as well. So tell us something more about it!

I am currently working on my first EP album which consist of 5 songs. Since I make most of my income from film making and comedy, I hardly get time to give in to my music, that is the reason why you still haven’t seen any original music in my profile. But I make sure I give time to music every night after I am done with my day because I cannot live without music and I just love spending time with my guitar. In last 2 years I have learned playing mandolin, ukulele, djembe and now learning melodica and mouth organ. All from YouTube!

  1. How do you deal with hecklers? Aren’t hecklers helpful for the show?

Hecklers will never “deal” with you,  the only way is to face it and be funnier than their hate in each of your replies and you’ll learn the art of stand up comedy. But it takes time. Keep doing regular open mics for that. Just keep doing it. The more you be on stage, the more you’ll learn to improvise as you’ll build comfort on stage with time.

  1. List some of your achievements!

I don’t have medals and trophys or certificates to mention. That was back in college when I was the cultural representative of the students association and was also a part of the college band and monthly newsletter. Have been a multitasker since then, that’s an achievement for every human being I believe. To learn how to multi-task.

But I believe all my videos are my achievements. I’ve seen myself improve in each of those videos and shows.

I’ve performed with and opened for many national comedians from the country like Zakir khan, Kanan gill, kenny Sebastian, atul Khatri, biswa, abish mathews, vipul goyal, Azim banaatwala, Kunal Rao, Rahul Subramanian, Jeeveshu, amit tandon, Manan desai (because he is also a known  national comedian. hehe)

My band opened for Anushka Manchanda in MSU’s footprints concert once. Won 8 battle of bands back in 2013-14. And a sweet acoustic custom made guitar once for best performance of the night in Surat.

  1. What are the biggest mistakes that comedians make?

Let’s figure that out further in life.

  1. Can you tell us a joke ?

What do you call a single banana?

-A’KELA’ (akela)

Joke bolne ko kahoge toh PJs hi milenge, show dekhne aaoge toh asli stand up milega, a place where you don’t ask me to tell you a joke but I’ve called you to hear it 😉

  1. Any struggles that you’ve faced as a stand-up comedian?

Not just a standup comedian, I am facing the struggle as a musician and film maker as well. Struggle doesn’t always define a bad situation. I believe it’s an important and positive part of our life that helps us grow better. You gotta keep rubbing yourself if you wanna shine like a diamond one day, isn’t it? 🙂

  1. A message you would like to give to all aspiring young comedians out there?

HEY GUYS.

RUN!

IT’S A TRAP!
