Siddharth Slathia  is a 25 year old aspiring singer and Youtube artist.  Siddharth grew up in Jammu and went to J.K Public School. His interest in singing aroused when he was 10. Siddharth sang in All India Radio and the local channels of Jammu, and also took part in many State level and National level competitions.

After his +2, Siddharth came to Jaipur to study Engineering. His college never supported his singing but his friends and fellow-collegians appreciated his singing and encouraged him to pursue a singing career. In conversation with Sidhharth :

Q: How and when did music interest you?

I think I was about 10 or 11 when I took part in a school competition and from that time itself music started to interest me. I started by giving auditions for the school annual day. My teacher selected me and was very impressed by my voice quality and gradually I got good platforms to showcase my  talent.

Q: From an engineering student to a You Tube singing sensation, tell us about your journey?

The journey has been extremely difficult. I was an average student at school, so my parents paid a handsome amount in “donation” to get me into an Engineering college in Jaipur. And then all of a sudden after watching 3 Idiots, I rang my parents and told them I want to quit it. My dad was against the idea. Then I started learning music from different gurus and also joined a college in Jammu to pursue Bachelors of Music. It has been a great challenge but I am happy with how everything has turned out.

Q: When did you post your first video? How was the response from public?

I think it was in 2010. It was a cover of a song which was really popular then. My cover had a huge response from the public and the original creators got my cover removed from youtube .

Q: What were the other platforms you used to sing on during your student life?

I have performed at various  college fests, during my student life.

Q: Who is your biggest inspiration? What’s your word of motivation that encourages you?

Sonu Nigam ji and Rafi Sahab. Motivational words..well, I have always believed that one shouldn’t be sincere to something to show to others that they are sincere. They should be genuinely sincere for themselves, for the love of work that they do. If you’re genuinely sincerely to yourself, there is nothing that can stop you.

Q: As a great You Tube artist what do you think leads out of the two: Original compositions or unplugged covers?

It all depends on what your goals are. If you are looking to enter the music scene as a composer then obviously you need to have original compositions out there. If you are looking to enter the industry as a playback singer then you do not necessarily need to sing your own original compositions because at the end of the day, every playback singer sings the music director’s compositions. A playback singer doesn’t necessarily have to be a composer too.

Q:What were the opportunities that YouTube brought up for you? What are your future goals?

I was offered the role of being the chief mentor at Indian Idol Academy because of my tutorials on YouTube. Every single thing that’s happened in my career is because of YouTube.

Q: Your personal engagement with your fans has been remarkable? Do you think it serves as an important part to keep up with the fan base?

Of course, it does. In this day and age when you can directly communicate to your audience, it is important that you have personal touch. It is important that you hear their feedback and also respond to their messages as much as you can. You can be the most talented person in the world but if you don’t have the audience, your talent goes to waste. So it is important to appreciate the role of the audience in any artist’s career.
