Finally the time has come. Asia’s largest technical and entrepreneurial fest, Techkriti returns. It signifies the creation or innovation of technology, and it goes without saying that it is one of the best and most awaited tech fests in the country. The excitement is already rising with the pre-fest events of Techkriti 2018. Techkriti’18 is scheduled from 15^th to 18^th March. The theme for this year is “Prism of Possibilities”. It serves as a prism to the masses to refract innovation through their own perspectives and creation and proffers leadership in full colors. Every day in the festival introduces a new beginning, all psyched up to disperse into the horizon of infinite possibilities. It holds a lot of workshops, talks and competitions with very large prize money. It also have pro-shows in which celebs like Sonu Nigam, Sapan Verma, Morgan & Zephyr Tone and many more come and show their talents.

Q1) Tell us about the historical background of Techkriti.

Techkriti is an annual inter-collegiate technical and entrepreneurship festival organized by the students of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. It was launched in 1995 with the aim of developing interest and encouraging innovation in technology among students. The festival is held over four days every March, attracting footfall of over 40,000 from around 1400 colleges all over the world. Techkriti was first held in the year 1995, and has since grown into one of the largest technical and entrepreneurial festivals in Asia.

Q2) What is the major goal or mission behind the fest and how do you plan on achieving it?

Our mission is to foster and improve the level of technical and entrepreneurial culture of the society. We try our best to achieve this by organising interesting talks, an extravaganza of events and competitions, even at the grassroot level.

Q3) Tell us in details about the events arranged in Techkriti 2018!

As we mentioned, earlier, Techkriti organises a variety of events and competitions, like TGP, CTF, IMP, etc, the complete list is available on its site. This year a few more events are being organised, like Biobuzz and Mandakini. Also we have a great many talks from well-known, renowned individuals, whose talks motivate the youth and inspire then to innovate, and achieve their dreams.

Q4) As we know every year, Techkriti, as a part of its social campaigns addresses one major issue in our world. What is it this year and why do you think it is essential for the society?

Techkriti ’17 took up an initiative to spread literacy and quality education to all sections of our society under its social initiative H.O.P.E. (Handing Opportunities by Promoting Education). Through H.O.P.E, we aimed at reaching out to kids who do not have adequate access to education and make learning a joy accessible to all. Another attempt of Techkriti to give back to the society was the ‘Spreading Smiles’ campaign, where we aimed at sending out positive messages to the stressed youngsters. Another extension to the Spreading Smiles campaign was ‘Make a Wish’, under which team Techkriti visited Subhash Children Home and fulfilled the wish of the children to have a sports and hobby room. Also, to sensitize the society towards the needs of the 22% of Indian Population which lives below poverty line with no access to proper water, food or shelter, leave alone the measures to combat the cold weather, Techkriti undertook the Winter Collection Drive in as many as 6 cities. We along with Prayas and other NGO’s are working to educate the children. We also have a health campaign where we are organizing health camps in nearby areas in association with the hospitals of Kanpur and Lucknow. We along with Goonj had also organized a collection drive to help the affected people of Uttarakhand. Techkriti ‘18 is continuing with this social campaign, and wants to achieve more height, and help the society, in a holistic level.

Q6) How do you manage to get collaborations from other universities?

Techkriti is a mutual collaboration, between the top universities of India. We have around 500 campus ambassadors as a part of our team and by them, we have a reach to over 1400 top universities of India.

IIT Kanpur, one of the most premium institutes of India, has always encouraged the spirit of innovation and technology through its annual technical festival Techkriti, which is known to be Asia’s largest Technical and Entrepreneurial festival. This year IIT Kanpur is conducting the 24th edition of Techkriti from 15th -18th March. Techkriti in its previous years has witnessed prominent personalities like Lt Dr A P J Abdul Kalam (Former Honourable President of India), Dr Hamid Karzai (Former Honorable President of Afghanistan), Pradeep Sindhu (Founder, Juniper Networks), Prof. Henry Schaffer III (Peter Deby Awar Winner, USA), David Reitz (Executive Director, LIGO Laboratory), Prof. K.C. Nicolaou (2016 Wolf Prize recipient for Chemistry, USA) and so many more, sharing their experiences with the most diverse representation from every corner of the country.

The diverse variety of competitions organized by Techkriti tries to provide a platform for students across the country to develop expertise in many technical skills as well as entrepreneurial skills. Some of the major competitions which witness a good number participation are:

a) IMP (Innovation in Manufacturing processes): Prize money: INR 5,00,000/-

It is a platform for students to display and exuberate their talent in design and manufacturing by designing an effective and innovative hardware model and giving a final working shape as a hardware prototype.

b) Skysparks: Prize money: INR 2,55,000/-

It is presented by The Boeing Company and Boeing National Aero Modelling Festival, IIT Kanpur to provide an opportunity to the students to compete for different flyers through a series of different rounds doing different manoeuvres and showing their talent in flying like payload dropping, limbo flying and on spot landing.

c) Robowars: Prize money: INR 2,50,000/-

It is a flagship event of Techkriti where participants come up with a wirelessly controlled robot capable of a one on one combat to win.

d) TIC ( Techkriti Innovation Challenge): Prize money: INR 2,00,000/-

TIC is the event which inspires students to come up with a fabricated idea, in the form of a working model, that can bring a positive change in the field of Technology.

e) IARC (International Autonomous Robotics Challenge): Prize money: INR 2,00,000/-

This event is all about an autonomous bot built from scratch by participants, judged on its ability to perform usual tasks. Top teams will be given free-internship opportunity in robotic companies in association with AICRA.

f) Upstart Pioneer: Prize money: INR 1,50,000/-

The event provides the platform where a startup can find its foundation. This contest aims at laying a carpet for startups to establish a big company by providing proper mentorship and guidance.

g) Multirotor: Prize money: INR 1,50,000/-

It is an event where students show their talents through Multi-rotor.

h) Techkriti Grand Prix: Prize money: INR 1,20,000/-

This is an event where the teams are required to fabricate a miniature model of a remote-controlled vehicle that is powered by an Internal Combustion(IC) Engine for propulsion.

i) IOPC (International Online Programming Contest ): Prize money: INR 1,00,000/-

It is a prestigious programming contest where each coder tries to code solutions to the given problems.

j) I.I.I. (Industry Institute Interaction): Prize money: INR 85,000/-

It is an event where civil department students are encouraged to solve engineering problems in industries for a greener economy.

CEG Tech Forum (CTF), completely student-run, ISO certified organization, was initiated in 2006 with the singular purpose of nurturing any outcome of creative thinking and provide a robust student limb for its development. It is the technical hub of the college. With a keen focus on projects catering to societal requirement and its progression towards a community of a stronger cognizance, CTF stands a true social body.

With a desire to showcase the technical geniuses’ schemes on display for the collectively large and passionate scientific community, Kurukshetra – International cfest of CEG, was introduced in 2007. As one of the sub continent’s most glamorous brain fests, Kurukshetra stands out in terms of its enormous footfall and undeniably large cash prizes. It is one of the few fests in the country to have procured the UNESCO patronage – the highest form of support granted by the organization, thereby placing it in league with some of the most prestigious endeavors in the world.

The 12th edition of the fest is happening between January 31st – Feb 3rd, 2018. The fest has grown in every way since its inception. The Inauguration Ceremony, scheduled on 31st January, will be graced by the presence of the Honourable Governor of Tamil Nadu, Shri. Banwarilal Purohit, which will then be followed by an array of eclectic events and workshops conducted between 10 AM – 6 PM for the next three days.

This edition features 35+ competitive events in 7 domains namely coding, engineering, extravaganza, management, quiz, online and robotics. Some of the most sought-after events are Godspeed, Robowars, Datathon, Alcatraz, Ninja Coding and Civil-Ex, to name a few.
At the heart of the 4 day-fest are workshops, designed to fuel the critical thinking capabilities and provide a platform wherein students can augment theoretical concepts with hands-on experience. 1. Why did you name your fest APOGEE? What does it signify?

“A Professional Oriented Gathering for Educational Experience”

2. Apogee is one of the biggest technical fests across the country. How do you and your team work to fulfill the events?

The group of 9 people called CoStAA manages the entire thing. They meet on  periodic intervals and co-ordinate with various members of the co-curricular clubs and associations to make it happen.

3. This year the theme of Apogee is “Women Empowerment”. What inspired you to put forward this issue?

The theme is ‘A Cybernetic Vision’ and the vision of APOGEE to a better society is Awareness of issues related to people. We started with children and somewhat women empowerment. Slowly we will try to touch all aspects of it.

4. Technical events usually are associated with the creative as well as the technical mindset of an individual. How do you people manage to include the fun part as well?

Well, we conduct a variety of events. We have done core and technical, some general and entertaining. Our events like ‘stock market simulation’ ‘lift it up’ ‘water rocketry’ includes the fun part of the event section of the fest. And other than events, we have entertainment nights, exhibitions to make the audience more engaging towards the fest!

5. Every event has some blunders associated with it. Would you like to share any?

The main blunder we were having was having two events at the same time as it was tough to schedule all events in 3 days, this time fest is of 4 days. So this shouldn’t persist any further.

6. Everyone in our society talks about problems and issues associated with women & children but hardly have we got any solution for it. How do you think will Apogee help in determining the solution?

We have a couple of campaigns running under APOGEE. One to spread awareness regarding finance named ‘Financial literacy campaign’ to various students in schools placed around campus. Another is ‘MADAD’ (mental awareness dialogue and discussion) to discuss the issue of mental stress among children in the world of competition. We would also be having talks on various such social issues with big names like Karuna Nandi, Sudha Menon, an entrepreneur panel of girl and their success stories!

AAROHAN

AAROHAN is a national level examination crafted and conducted by the students of BITS Pilani in schools. The examination is conducted for classes IX, X, XI and XII. The aim of this examination is to inculcate scientific temperament and get the coming generation interested towards scientific and technical development studies. All that only at a cost of Rs. 150 per student.

Apart from a right-hand exposure to a national level exam and an opportunity to compete with students from schools across India, Aarohan has a lot more to do. You will get an ‘All India Rank’(AIR) and a certificate of participation. The school and city toppers will get a certificate of merit stating the same and would also get exciting prizes according to their ranks. The winners will be invited to BITS Pilani’s technical fest APOGEE. They’ll have access to all the events and workshops happening on the campus and have round two and some other events exclusively for them. And on a materialistic and tangible scale, there’ll be exciting goodies and prizes as well as the opportunity to interact with the most progressive minds of the country.

“Xpressions 2017 Day 1, Day 2”

10^th, 11^th November 2017, Bhubaneswar

Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar-Xavier University (XIMB-XUB) kick-started Xpressions’17, the biggest B-School Fest in India, on 10^th November 2017. The day was marked with enthusiasm and exuberance of participants and audience, truly justifying the 3 months of planning and efforts of the students.

DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS- EVENTS

It kicked off with Business Simulation events such as Gladiator, Skill City, Kurukshetra and Helios, the flagship mega events by the gaming committees of XIMB-XUB. Gladiator, a simulation of real-world management scenarios, tested the best brains in the country to unravel their business acumen. Skill City, one of the toughest business events, had teams prove their mettle in soft skills through a series of rounds. Kurukshetra, a virtual battlefield which tested the participants’ business acumen, saw teams fight it out to make it through to next round. Helios, the only under-graduate specific event saw young minds harvest their raw managerial wisdom in challenging business scenarios in the HR and Marketing modules. The very first edition of HR Xpress, a flagship fun event of the HR Association-XIMHAR, also took place as a part of Xpressions’17.

The next in line was XIMB-XUB Model United Nation, a simulation of proceedings of United Nations, organized by SpeakUp, the Oratory Club of XIMB-XUB. Parikrama-a single round National Level Online Treasure Hunt Competition by X-Sys, the Systems Association of XIMB-XUB, tested the participants on general awareness, presence of mind and analytical skills. Social Responsibility Cell (SRC) and SpeakUp hosted Vakritva, an elocution competition laced with creativity. The second round of Nirnay – An operations business simulation game was also organized, which tested participants’ acumen in operations.

Xpressions also held its first of a kind paint ball event- Paint it Up by the International Relations Committee. Paint@XIMB, organized by Spicmacay, XIMB, a painting competition helped the participants unleash their creative side. LitSoc, the Literary Society of XIMB-XUB also culminated its event, “Flight of Fancy”. Participation was observed from various B-schools from all over the country in the solo singing competition- Goonj. Carnival De Vogue, the Fashion Show of Xpressions was filled with bright personalities walking with elegance and panache. The first day of Xpressions concluded at a high note with the much-awaited EDM Night by Lost Stories, an Indian duo composed of Prayag Mehta and Rishab Joshi.

DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS -EVENTS

The morning of 11^th November saw a fresh wave of excitement at XIMB, as the college bustled with a myriad of events. The business simulation games, Kurukshetra, Gladiator, Skill City, and Helios continued to challenge the students in their subsequent rounds on day 2.0. A fun, interactive ‘Maxim Mela’ was organized by the Marketing association of XIMB with the colorful theme of ‘The Jungle Book’.

Case study competitions presented a platform for students to come up with innovative strategies for handling complex business scenarios. Maven saw many teams from some of the most elite B-Schools competing over several rounds. Case Connect witnessed the top teams, selected through an offline quiz; grapple with various domains of business. M-power through its series of elimination rounds over the past couple of days finally culminated with its final presentation round. Trade Wars was a unique online trading simulation game that required students to apply their financial strategies in Indian Stock Markets in real time quotes.

Urbaniac is a business simulation competition aimed at building sustainable, smart and livable cities organized by ConXerv. Case in Point, the Case study competition organized by XIMAHR encouraged participants to showcase their analytical and problem solving skills. A fun and lively event, ‘Baal Baal Bachey’ was conducted by the committee for sustainability. Students were tested upon their knowledge, analytical skills, their business acumen and their strategic thinking in the event- Ascend. Vridhi- a CSR Case study competition saw many teams participating who not only developed the Business model for the industry, but also people who will be affected by it.

Xpress on Air, the RJ hunt competition in association with Sarthak FM, added spice to Xpressions with 10 aspiring RJ’s making it to the final lap to portray their wit, fluency and presence of mind. Quizzing being the hobby and forte of many, XIMB also conducted Inquizzitive- the Flagship Quizzing competition to test the general knowledge and mettle of students. XIMB was enveloped in a color of culture with events such as Goonj and Pratibimb. Pratibimb, the face- painting competition saw students create magnificent face paintings and go wild to discover the artist within them.

As dusk approached signaling a thousand lights springing to life, the atmosphere dived into a different dimension as ‘DecibelZ’ powered by MTV Beats, XIMB’s band-hunt competition kicked off to some thumping beats, captivating the audience with its rhythm. The event attracted a huge crowd swaying to the masterful renditions by bands from Calcutta, Bangalore and other cities from far and near.

With unmatched enthusiasm, camaraderie from students and able aid from our benevolent sponsors Central Bank of India, MCL, Coca Cola, Indian Oil, TATA Steel, Arrelic, National Insurance, Mayfair, Maruti Suzuki- Colours of Youth  and Safexpress for the, day two of Xpressions’17 ended on a high crescendo with a promise of a lot more to come on the final day.

“Xpressions 2017 Pre-event”

Xpressions 2017, one of the biggest Management-Cultural fest India, is a three-day extravaganza which is scheduled to take place from 10th to 12th November 2017. At the heart of any management fest lies the business events, and Xpressions 2017 offers a plethora of multi-faceted competitions to its various stakeholders. Keeping the 30 years of its legacy alive are the four prime, business simulations which XIMB hosts every year at Xpressions.

The Grand Events in Xpressions 2017

Keeping in mind the veritable business acumen required to do well in the corporate world, the business events are designed to test one’s managerial skills. Skill City, as the name suggests, encourages participants to look within and mine the soft skills required to become an excellent manager, while Kurukshetra, keeping true to its historic counterpart, is blood & suit-worthy battle in the field of business. One does not start their journey to any prestigious B-school in India the day they step on the harrowed grounds of the campus.

It starts on the day the applicant aspires to step foot in a premier institute. In alignment to this ethos is Helios, a one-of-a-kind business simulation only for under-graduate participants from diverse backgrounds, honing and testing their management potential and business acumen. Spardha, the social business plan competition of XIMB, but rather creates a platform for generating ideas, concepts, policy suggestions and beyond not only for business but people who are affected by business as well. Finally, Gladiator engages its participants through a series of challenging rounds covering an array of management skills.

The glory of these mind-boggling competitions is further enhanced by events like Case in Point – a national-level HR Case Study competition, organised by XIMAHR (the HRM association), and Parikrama – a national-level Online Scavenger Hunt, organised by XSYS (the systems association). Similarly, catering to the nuances of various verticals of the corporate world, Xpressions sees the likes of Maven (a national-level competition, organised by Constrat: the strategy association), Trade Wars (an online trading simulation, organised by XFin: the finance association), Mpower (organised by Maven, the marketing association of XIMB) and Urbaniac (a Business Model Competition, organised by HabituX: The Urban Management association). The Model United Nations, and EnigmaX, an online treasure hunt organised exclusively for the alumni of XIMB, rounds up the business competitions organised in Xpressions.

Amongst all the case competitions, the students bring with them a multitude of talents in various cultural competitions organized on all the three days. Decibelz, the War of Bands brings with it rock music, and keeps the crowd enthralled. Goonj, the solo singing competition and Thirkan, the dance competition gets out the best in students. Aaghaz, the Nukkad Natak event which actually happens on the streets shows some real emotions, leaving the crowd moved. The Carnival De Vogue, which is the Fashion Show competition judges the team on their walk, creativity, elegance and overall performance.

These cultural and business events foster the soul of Xpressions, undoubtedly one of the biggest management & cultural fest of India; giving a platform to the leaders of tomorrow to showcase their ability to take on formidable challenges today. This year Xpressions will be the host to a Live performance by Farhan Akhtar. Performing for the very first time in Bhubaneswar, not just XIMBians, but also the whole of Bhubaneswar awaits his performance. It will be a starry night, adding another feather to the cap of all the previous glorious Xpressions.
