APOGEE is the annual, international technical festival of BITS Pilani. Apogee’18 will be the 36th edition of this technological symposium and shall be hosted in BITS Pilani from 21st-25th February, 2018. The aim is to connect students from campuses all over India by making them aware of Technical, Cultural, Management Fests, Workshops, Conferences, Seminars organized by each and every college in India.

We are expecting participation of around 8000 students from more than 100 colleges this year. About to 80+ events are organised which aims to incline students
towards intellectual and innovative participation in the fest.

1. Why did you name your fest APOGEE? What does it signify?

“A Professional Oriented Gathering for Educational Experience”

2. Apogee is one of the biggest technical fests across the country. How do you and your team work to fulfill the events?

The group of 9 people called CoStAA manages the entire thing. They meet on  periodic intervals and co-ordinate with various members of the co-curricular clubs and associations to make it happen.

3. This year the theme of Apogee is “Women Empowerment”. What inspired you to put forward this issue?

The theme is ‘A Cybernetic Vision’ and the vision of APOGEE to a better society is Awareness of issues related to people. We started with children and somewhat women empowerment. Slowly we will try to touch all aspects of it.

4. Technical events usually are associated with the creative as well as the technical mindset of an individual. How do you people manage to include the fun part as well?

Well, we conduct a variety of events. We have done core and technical, some general and entertaining. Our events like ‘stock market simulation’ ‘lift it up’ ‘water rocketry’ includes the fun part of the event section of the fest. And other than events, we have entertainment nights, exhibitions to make the audience more engaging towards the fest!

5. Every event has some blunders associated with it. Would you like to share any?

The main blunder we were having was having two events at the same time as it was tough to schedule all events in 3 days, this time fest is of 4 days. So this shouldn’t persist any further.

6. Everyone in our society talks about problems and issues associated with women & children but hardly have we got any solution for it. How do you think will Apogee help in determining the solution?

We have a couple of campaigns running under APOGEE. One to spread awareness regarding finance named ‘Financial literacy campaign’ to various students in schools placed around campus. Another is ‘MADAD’ (mental awareness dialogue and discussion) to discuss the issue of mental stress among children in the world of competition. We would also be having talks on various such social issues with big names like Karuna Nandi, Sudha Menon, an entrepreneur panel of girl and their success stories!

7. If we ask you to describe Apogee in your words, what would it be? Taking all your experiences and memories, what significance does Apogee has in your life?

For me, APOGEE is a platform where one gets closer to reality, to his/her core, realizes what things he/she interested in! Being one of India’s finest engineering colleges, a technical fest should be of a great stature, and so is our aim, to make APOGEE bigger, better and bonzer!

Mohit, 19 is from Delhi, and is not just another guy calling himself a Photographer; His photographs say what he is capable of. He just doesn’t click photos, he freezes time with his skills. Photography isn’t just a passion for him, he lives the photography. He’s not only mastered the Photography but also the Graphics Editing. His main focus is Fine Art & Portrait Photography. Mohit also performed as a Youtuber Vlogger for a long time. Mohit started a youtube channel in 2013, at the age of 15. He used to make videos about Windows Customization, he had this thing in mind to do daily vlogs for a while so right after he completed school he started vlogging daily for like 169 days after that he shifted to Instagram for photography and currently not making videos anymore but yeah soon will start again!

Lets get to know more about the artist in him, we have for you Mohit Kumar

In Conversation with Mohit- 

Q1. Could you tell us a bit about your Educational background?

A) I completed my 12th( Science Stream ) in 2016 but took up English Honors as a subject for graduation ( I am in 2nd year right now).

Q2. Did you go to any school of photography or any training?

A) I didn’t learn photography from any institution, I just watch a lot of youtube videos regarding photography/editing.

Q3. Do you have a team for the clicks? What kind of shoots you & your team prefer?

A) I always take my friend Divesh ( @diveshify ) on shoots with me. He helps a lot on the shoot like maybe holding the reflector or giving his camera, when I hadn’t my own camera he used to provide me his own camera. I usually prefer Fine Art or Portrait Photography, but I also do Wedding Photography.

Q4. Any message you want to give to the society through your clicks?

A) I just wanna let society know especially in India, that art can pay off of your bills and you don’t need a 9-5 job for that. Also, there is also some sort of narrative in my photos which different people relate differently.

Q5. What do you enjoy the most about your work?

A) Although I am an introvert, I actually enjoy meeting new people every single day, and for like past 8-9 months I actually meet a new person every single day.

Q6. How do you choose the subject and the theme behind your photography?

A) I usually take inspiration from movies, if something clicks in my mind I will build a mood board around the idea & then find the model on Instagram, I also plan my every single shot I take before shoot.

Q7. Whats the difference b/w the formal shoots & the street photography according to you as nowadays street photography is taking over.

A) I actually don’t do street at all, I just do fine art & portraits in general because that helps me to tell the narrative to people more easily( at least that’s what I feel ).

Q8. Any dream project for you or anything that you dream about?

A) I dream about having a strong community of photographers in India that’s what I dream.

Q9.  What type of cameras do you shoot with? And what do you think about new generation Mobile photography?

A)  I shoot with a Nikon d750 with a 50mm f/1.4, I think you can take a picture with anything and yes you can get a great picture with mobile you just need to know about lighting.

Q10.  In current era as we have so many filters & edits what do you think about the original & edited photography?

A) Photography is an art form, the outcome should be good enough no matter how you get it. Editing is a part of photography.

Q11. What has been your favorite project that you have shot?

A) This has to be my favorite shot this is from one of my personal projects & I loved this shot because that is exactly the shot I had in mind but apart from that, when we were shooting this the temperature was 8 degree Celsius and my model ( Anusha ) was shivering and was in the tub for like an hour & I just love the fact that she didn’t come out of the tub until I was happy.

AAROHAN

Writing is liberating, empowering and a life-changing experience but not many get the opportunity to showcase the same to the world. Presently working at McKinsey and Company, Abhishek Gupta is an Economics major from Kirori Mal College who stands as a young example of how to make one’s dreams come true via writing. Author of India’s first ever travel photo-poetry collection – ‘Iridescence’, we got an opportunity to have an enlightening conversation with him about his dreams, aspirations and his current calling.

In a conversation with Abhishek :

Being an Economics Major from Kirori Mal College, how did the idea pinning down a book come up?

Every person has this childhood fantasy, mine was to grow up and write a book. So as soon as I found an idea which could make a difference to Indian Literature, the first thing I did was to write the book.

The title of the book – ‘Iridescence’ literally means a lustrous or attractive quality that changes with the change in the angle of view. Metaphorically, why did you choose this title and no other?

Travel changes you.  It makes you look at things differently. In Iridescence, I have tried to voice and give vision to different junctures of my journey of self-discovery and my discovery of the world. This book would mean different things to different people. It may make you reflect, introspect, awaken, love, invigorate and hope. It may make you look at the same poem differently as you read it at different points of your life. This is a book to tuck under your pillow on cold lonely nights and it is also a book to flip through on a fresh refreshing morning.

Your perspective will define what Iridescence ends up meaning to you. And thus, what better way to sum this photo-poetry book than to call it ‘Iridescence’?

How did the idea of juxtaposing photography and poetry in a single book come to your mind? 

I had been an avid writer since school. In my first year college, I started doing photography. I was away to Africa for an internship around that time where sitting on the beach I was writing poetry. That’s when it struck me that it would be a great idea to combine photos and poetry in a book. It took me 3 years since then to materialize the book.

Most of your poems are an inspiration picked up directly from nature. Any story behind this you’d like to share with us? 

When I started with photography, I clicked nothing but flora, and then slowly started clicking landscapes. Nature inspires me the most, and I particularly write the most when I am traveling. I strongly believe that nature has the power to amaze you and has a lot of wisdom to impart to you about life.

What motivated you to travel and pen down your thoughts in the form of poetry? 

My primary motivation to travel was to get out of my comfort zone and to experience life and different ways of living beyond my confines. I wanted to breathe the air of new places and collect moments worth reliving. Photography was also one of the major reasons triggering all my travel.

Soon after, I discovered, Photo-poetry was the perfect medium to make a picture and moment eternal for myself and as well as for the readers. And then the camera didn’t stop clicking and the pen kept scribbling onto the pages of my travel journal.

Do you think poetry as a form of writing needs a new lease of life? What are your comments about the culture of poetry that we have in the country today?

I think we are at a unique point in the history of literature where we are heading towards digitalization and experimenting more than ever before. Poetry in India too needs innovation to enhance its market and appeal. It no longer needs to be about being free verse or sonnet or a haiku. It could be in different patterns, in various styles, lengths, and on any particular theme.

I think the poetry scenario in India is reforming and broadening its horizons. There are slam poetry sessions every weekend, blogs and Instagram flooding with new budding Indian poets more than ever before and a wider acceptance of new forms of poetry. It is a privilege to witness such a rich growing poetry culture in our country.

Being a young author, you must have faced many unprecedented challenges and obstacles in the path of getting yourself published. Any anecdotes or important advice you wish to pass on to our young readers and aspiring authors?

Poetry is something that is very close to the writer, so I think the first obstacle is making peace with the fact that you are opening yourself to the entire world.  So don’t be afraid of opening yourself up to the world.

And then the second obstacle is apparently finding a publisher. So all I would say is that if you reach out to 50 publishers, only 5 would respond back and 1 will for sure accept your idea, and that is all that will make a difference.

In a collection of more than 30 poems, which poem is very close to you or has a special place among the plethora of experiences that helped you collate this book?

Each poem is very close to my heart, so it would be very unfair if I choose one. But if I have to choose, then it would be ‘Probably Exuberance’. Because that was the first photo-poetry I wrote, and that’s where Iridescence started.

To discover a new ratio between the same- Ramanujan College along with its students , faculty and administration  founded RamComm-The commerce society of Ramanujan College.

Ever since its formation, RamComm has always strived to bring out the best possible outcomes one could expect. The commerce fest, ‘Bizz-Blaze’ being the best example, which saw huge crowd of student participation from various colleges across the country.

The most important mission of RamComm is ‘Go for Breakthrough’ and to achieve it the team of RamComm supports and mentors every individual to grow to his/her full potential. They seek to achieve this as a team and always support intellectual discussions to maintain the focus among commerce and intellect.

The Commerce Department of Ramanujan College recently conducted an outreach program for the construction workers in the college on the occasion of Diwali. Several games were organized with numerous gifts for every winner. A short movie on hygiene was shown to them to make them aware of the importance of hygiene in daily life. Later all were given clothes which were donated by the college students and teachers, followed by lunch for everyone. Not only do they focus on commerce but have also kept a good hand in the social problems , helping to bridge the gap between commerce and society.

Tell us about the history of your society?  The main inspiration and motivation behind starting it? What are the main Goals and objectives of it ?

RamComm– The commerce society of Ramanujan College was founded on February 9,2013.

What are your future plans regarding the expansion of the society?

A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic!  It takes sweat, determination and years of hard work to achieve it.

RamComm Society had started from the ground level and today has managed to grow fruits of labor , hard work and success. It is said that “Aim for the moon, even if you fail, you will land among the stars“. We aim to make RamComm a known name amongst all Delhi University colleges . We hope for collaborations with top notch colleges and sponsorship from the best companies. We aim to rise above the rest and take part in all inter college events and win accolades for the same. Organizing fests, events, competitions, fund raisers etc, to boost the morale and confidence are too on the list. We wish to see RamComm shine brighter and better in the upcoming years.

What are the biggest achievements or the accolades of the society at the national or the global level?

Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.

We, as a society always focus on growth and development of the students and the society. From conducting a 2 day International Conference  to organizing Mock Stock , we teach students how to deal with situations based on the global scenario as well as deal in market shares. From conducting Bid for Dead to Outreach Programs for the workers and their families, we aim to bridge the gap between everyone. The society acts as a ground for overall development and growth of the students and aims for the betterment of the nation, as a whole.

The long awaited annual cultural fest of IIIT Allahabad is here already ! EFFERVESCENCE 2017 it is and is going live on 13th October to 15th October. It is going to be the biggest cultural fest of the state and is already making all the hype for it’s oh so! celebrity night, where our favorite Milkha Singh, Yes ! Farhan Akthar will be performing!

Being the second largest college fest in Uttar Pradesh and a well renowned one in India it witnesses both national and international participation in its multiple events. After the well maintained standards each year, IIIT Allahabad has organised the 14^th edition of their fabulous college fest – Comio presents Effervescence’17 in association with MTV Beats and VH1, the theme of the fest being is “Effervescence’17 : An Indian Affair”. Are you a medical student, a resident doctor or a physician? If yes, then you will definitely relate with this one. Violence against doctors has become a serious issue in major parts of India. If a patient’s condition deteriorates, the patient’s family starts threatening the assigned doctor and many doctors have even reported physical abuse. Due to these events, doctors are stepping down from taking emergency cases as it’s no longer safe for our own life saviors. But as every cloud has a silver lining, this situation is no different. Unveiling in front of you the DERT App in which with a single tap, a doctor can share his name, hospital’s name, location and number with everyone in the community in form of a push notification or an SMS. This can be done when he feels there is a chance of violence or if the situation is no longer under control.

Here we bring you an interesting story where youngsters are using technology positively, to solve people’s problems, educate and save their life. We have for you Sharad Agarwal, who not only developed the app, DERT, but also helped the ones who help the world – the doctors.

 In conversation with Sharad Agarwal :

1) Hey! Sharad, It’s our pleasure talking to you. Can we know a bit about you ?

Hi! I am Sharad Agarwal. I am a final year Computer Science Engineering student from Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai. I am a cyber security enthusiast. I hail from Dehradun and both my parents are doctors, who are practising there from last 20 years.

2) How did you come up with the idea of DERT  ?

Though doctors save us from the claws of death several times, they face patients who are rude and violent. They fail to understand the fact that Doctors are not Gods. There have been instances where the doctors have been attacked by the relatives of patients who died during the treatment. During such situations, doctor can notify everyone in the community about the situation and can ask for help by simply tapping a button on the app. I teamed up with my classmate Prasang Sharma from VIT, Chennai for this. DERT was finally incubated and completed in June 2016 and is available on Playstore.

3) So, how does this app work ?

This app works on cross platforms which is supported by AWS (Amazon Web Services ) web servers and MSG91’s OTP ( One Time Password ) services. We have arranged a list of affiliated doctors and their phone numbers to help them log in and verify their numbers from our server and then ensuring the user with an OTP which lets them login successfully. In case of emergency user can click on the ‘EMERGENCY’ button to send their details to everyone in the community to seek help. Thereby making it a dedicated SOS app for the closed community.

4) How many doctors are currently benefiting from this ?

As of now, every doctor in Dehradun is using this app. Dehradun, being my hometown and belonging to a medical background, I know most of the doctors there. The doctors in the Indian Medical Association, Dehradun became our first target and customers. We started with 123 doctors at the beginning and now we have 160+ doctors who are connected to the DERT app community.

5) How are you planning to expand and market your app?

We want to expand it to multiple cities across India. DERT is more than a project. We have been in constant touch with various Indian Medical Associations across the country to expand and market our app with their help. After all, it’s not just an app, it’s a movement to stop violence against the doctors.

“All cases of violence are not reported. Doctors often understand the situation of relatives who are in distress and do not report such cases“, says Indian Medical Association, General Secretary, Dr. KK Aggarwal

6)  How serious are you about solving other issues  which are plaguing our society?

Computer engineers not only try to solve problems, but we try to analyze them first and then find the best possible solution. We always support digital India and contributing to the society always gives us a sense of satisfaction even if we don’t receive personal benefits. We believe in the power of technology and want to serve our society and solve more issues in the near future.

7) Have your parents who are doctors themselves felt safer after using the Dert App ?

My parents feel safer now and so do other doctors. Doctors say that although they are provided with round the clock security at the hospitals, DERT has helped a lot in terms of safety and giving them confidence while working. “Anytime there is a chaos or any emergency problem, we just tap the button and we have at least 40-50 doctors standing with us at any point of time,” Sharad’s parents remarked at launch of DERT.
