Copper is a diamagnetic substance, aluminium is a paramagnetic substance, brass and plastic are non-magnetic substances. When the strip of iron is held in the same space, the washer falls from its position because iron is a ferromagnetic substance that will disrupt the magnetic field of the circular magnet.
