Valentine’s Day- The Charm of the Special Day of Love

Popularly known as the month of love, the much anticipated February sweeps every Romeo and Juliet off their feet with its charm on February 14th. It brings together lovers from all walks of life who commemorate their love and share joy. It’s the day when people honor love as the greatest source of life’s sustenance. The famous quip by American comedian Jim Gaffingan, “Without Valentine’s Day, February would be…well, January,” perfectly encapsulates the heartfelt core of this day. Distinct countries have different ways of celebrating love. It’s not like there’s a conventional flower, chocolate, or card exchange going on around the globe. Every person comes with their own ways to celebrate this day. But, first and foremost, do you know the significance of Valentine’s Day?

Why is the significance of Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th, when couples send messages and presents to each other. Despite its modern significance, Valentine’s Day did not always represent love as we know it. People commemorate Saint Valentine, a 3rd century Catholic Priest from Rome on this day. There are many tales about him that have become legends. It is said that several Romans converted to Christianity in the third century. Around the same time Emperor Claudius II, a pagan, enacted laws governing what Christians could and could not do. He also claimed that Roman soldiers should be entirely dedicated to their homeland, therefore he enacted a harsh regulation prohibiting them from marrying a Christian woman.

It was under the rule of Emperor Claudius when Saint Valentine assisted many Roman soldiers in marrying their love through Christian customs albeit clandestinely. After Emperor Claudius II discovered Valentines marrying Roman soldier off, he was imprisoned and charged with a felony. When Valentine was imprisoned, he looked after the other inmates as well as the jailor’s blind daughter. According to folklore, he cured the girl of her eyesight and wrote her a letter with the signature “From your Valentine” before his execution. Saint Valentine was beheaded on February 14th. So now we celebrate Valentine’s Day in the memory of St Valentines.
