Gurman Birdi’s Interview:

1.What inspired you to become a singer?

1. I found myself as in Shabad Gayan” competitions since when I was in 1st class.  Every team has a special singer who give  “Alaap” that was me in our team. This went on till 5th Standard. I went with the flow as in team with no uniqueness of myself. Then I got 1st prize in Inter class competition in my school and  people started identifying me uniquely.
Inspiration I believe is in my voice. My singing makes sad people happy. People told me that “Your voice is pure typical Punjabi folk genre which touches our heart“. Those words inspire me a lot.

2.What made you choose this field? Is there anyone who has influenced you?Mention some of your memorable performances.

Choosing Singing as a Field was not more than a conquer in itself. When I grew up with music my parents wanted me to join some company. But I was after Music. God gifted me music and it is said “Do what makes you feel lively and happy”. I feel very complete with music. Influenced by People’s Belief and their remarkable comments,  I chose to be attached with it life long.
I have performed as playback behind folk dances events in many colleges. It’s a huge list. All main universities like PU Chd. , PAU, Punjabi University, Patiala, GNDU Amritsar. Latest one was National Youth Fest 2017 at Kolhapur with GNE college.

3. You have won prizes In 32nd North Youth Fest. How did you feel? Since how long were you Preparing?

In every game or competition player expects more. Likely, I used to think to make it to “National“. I was a performer since 2011 in my college. I knew that before National Competition , there is Zonal and Inter Zonal for North Inter University. It was a long way to go. It was like a dream till 2017, when in the last year of my study 2017, I finally made it to Finals and was there for Nationals. It was the best moment of the College life as 6 years of hardwork and dedication finally paid.

 4. Tell us about your Journey. How did it start?

It started with a Facebook page. Firstly we create our Fb page Desi Folkism , there I posted first video followed by second. There was no great response. But when I posted my 3rd video it got 26000 + views. People from Canada , England too downloaded my video and they called and  text me. I got really boosted up. Then I posted “Langhe pani”. I was having my audience. I posted one more  song on Punjab elections and got 9000 + views on it. My song on Suicide of a Student was a bang. Many produces, directors came to know about who Gurman Birdi is!

5.”Bhangra Boliyan” has a great no. of views. How did it motivate you for your Further covers.

When we were recording “Bhangra Boliyan” in 2013, I wasn’t much experienced. My coach prepared it for a “Russian Fest”. At that time I was only happy for my voice was going for an International Fest. After four years in 2017, I arranged for Track and reposted it. Result is all in front of you. 🙂

6.Currently working as a School Teacher, How did you manage with your singing skills?

It was due to financial reasons I joined as a School Teacher. It was all because my parents wanted me to do the job. They wanted me to be settle in some Company. But there since I wouldn’t have been able to continue my passion, I joined School. Here I came back by 2 p.m. and thereafter go for Gym session and followed by Music practice.
I don’t feel teaching interesting anymore. Students remain calm and tension free in my class :p.
Let’s see what happens. It all in the hands of Waheguru. “God has gifted it to me and he will show me the way”.
