Solid or hollow metal idols of gods and goddesses are cast by the lost wax process. The intricate details are worked on later, after the casting. The accessories are sometimes made of embossed silver, gold or bronze. This depends on the skill of the artisan (also known as the shtapatis) and the price of the finished product. The idols are made according to the Shilpa Shastras, and many temples in south India are regular patrons. The prominent patrons being the Krishna temples at Udipi and Guruvayur and the Meenakshi temple at Madurai. Idols which have a reddish tinge usually contain a higher percentage of copper in the alloy.
