ODI all world cup winners – A comprehensive guide!

1. ODI Cricket World Cup (1975 and 1979):

Winner: West Indies 

The first edition of the ODI Cricket World Cup was held in 1975 and played in England. This edition featured 8 teams, including Australia, India, England, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, East Africa, and New Zealand. Under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd, the West Indies won the initial World Cup against Australia in the final by 17 runs. 

Bowlers like Andy Roberts, Keith Boyce, and Bernard Jullen and renowned batsmen Lloyd and Vivian Richards assisted the Caribbean team win the trophy without losing a match.

In 1979, four years later, the West Indies team retained their title in the Cricket World Cup, again hosted by England. They competed with the host country in the final and won by 92 runs to lift the trophy for their consecutive title.

2. ODI Cricket World Cup (1983):

Winner: India

The Indian Cricket Team obtained a winning title in the cricket ODI World Cup, in 1983. Securing their first title and overcoming all odds, the team achieved a historic victory. Under the leadership of Kapil Dev, despite being considered the weak time, India reached the semi-finals after a powerful performance in the group stage, beating teams like Australia, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. 

India won against England in the semi-finals and was set to face the mighty West Indies in the final match. The West Indies team, which was determined to win the title for the third time in a row, looked headed for victory after restricting India to a paltry score of 183 runs.

Indian cricket team’s inspired bowling, however, under Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath, turned the wave in their side. They bowled out the rival team for just 140 runs in 52 overs, eventually defending their total score and securing the title of winners.

3. ODI Cricket World Cup (1987): 

Winner: Australia

This time cricket one-day World Cup was organized outside of England. This was the first time when Pakistan and India shared the hosting responsibilities of the tournament. Games were reduced from 60 overs to 50 overs per inning due to the lack of daylight in the Indian subcontinent.

Led by Allan Border, Australia emerged victorious in the 1987 ODI World Cup. The winning team demonstrated its determination and strength in the 1987 tournament after learning from its poor performance in the 1983 edition. Australia defeated the Pakistani cricket team by 18 runs made it to the semi-finals and secured its position in the final against England.

4. ODI Cricket World Cup (1992):

Winner: Pakistan

Pakistan became the Cricket World Cup champions in 1992, and the 1992 ODI edition was hosted by England and Australia. South Africa participated in the ODI edition for the first time. Unfortunately, Pakistan had a disappointing start to the event; however, they made a strong comeback in one of their first five matches and booked a place in the semi-finals.

Under the captaincy of Imran Khan, the Pakistani team scored an innings of 72 runs and made a total of 249/6 in the final match. Pakistan’s bowlers performed brilliantly and bowled out the rival team for 227 runs, and won by 22 runs.

5. ODI Cricket World Cup (1996):

Winner: Sri Lanka

In the World Cup winners list cricket, another winner was Sri Lanka. The 1996 tournament was played in the Indian subcontinent and hosted by the winning team itself. Under the captaincy of Arjuna Ranatunga, the Sri Lankan cricket team showcased significant determination and skills within this edition. 

Sri Lanka and India competed in the semi-finals in Kolkata at Eden Gardens. During the match, the Sri Lankan team defeated the Indian team. 6. ODI Cricket World Cup (1999, 2003, and 2007):

Australia has the most number of World Cup titles in World Cup cricket winners list. In the 1999 tournament, Australian dominance began and they bowled out Pakistan for 132 runs out of the target in less than 20 overs in the final.

The 2003 ODI Cricket World Cup was held in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Kenya. The edition featured 14 teams, instead of the initial 12 competing teams. This time Australia scored 359 runs at the loss of 2 wickets and became the winning team by defeating India by 125 runs.

The 2007 edition of the ODI was hosted by the West Indies, featuring 16 teams. The event continued when Australia played against Sri Lanka in the final, extending their winning streak to 29 matches and winning by 53 runs. Australia became the first country to win the title three consecutive times.
