Motorola Moto G Turbo Quick Impressions!

The days have gone when the budget devices represented low end smartphones,
In the past years, if you have looked for a budget friendly smartphone, then Motorola’s Moto G has definitely crossed your path, right? Always offering best for the budget specifications, great build quality and no doubt one of the best software experience at a price tag that can’t be complained about.

In the recent past Motorola unveiled Moto G 3rd gen. We know that back in the day Moto G 1st gen had almost no competition what so ever, the budget market has expanded over time and this time around we have some really strong competitors for the 3rd iteration of Moto G like the ASUS Zenfone 2, Samsung Galaxy J5, Xiaomi Mi 4i and many more. Although the 2015 model was able to manage the first position offering a great combination of both hardware and software, it did lack in a few departments like the processor and the display resolution.

So guess what? A few months later they release Moto G Turbo Edition! *Turbo standing for Turbo charging*. So let’s take a closer look at what Motorola’s latest offering has in store for us…

DESIGN AND BUILD

By a quick glance, you can see that it’s very closely identical to the 3rd Gen Moto G which takes a lot from the previous variants. The shape hasn’t changed a lot, incorporating two speaker grills on the front (only one of which is a speaker), a headphone jack accompanied by a secondary noise cancellation microphone on the top, a micro-USB port on the bottom and all the buttons to the right (the power button is ridged so the texture can be distinguished just by the touch).

However, the back of the device is where all the magic has happened. The camera housing consisting of the 13MP rear camera and a color correcting dual LED flash is made up of some kind of a pseudo-metallic structure which feels quiet nice in hand specially with that classic Motorola dimple. The back cover is also textured with curves to give you a better grip in hand no matter which way you hold it and the magic is not over yet, it contains rubber gaskets inside the back casing which makes the device water resistant. Overall the device has very sturdy build and also features and IP67 water as well as dust resistance. *You can’t go wrong with that.*

DISPLAY

This is something that hasn’t changed in a while now and by far is the only drawback I see, the display panel is same from previous models that is a 5-inch HD 720p IPS LCD display (1280X720), don’t get me wrong the display is sharp and good quality with decent viewing angles, colors and brightness. It’s just that we are seeing a lot of Full HD displays these days so you miss the crisp in the display at a pixel density of 294ppi (pixels per inch).

HARDWARE

Powering the Turbo Edition is an Octa-core Snapdragon 615 SoC (coupled with Adreno 405 GPU) which is a bump up from the quad-core Snapdragon 410 in the 3rd gen. As for the technical terms, 4 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz and 4 64-bit Cortex A-53 cores clocked at 1.0 GHz. Apart from that it packs in 2 GB of RAM with 16 GB on-board storage and supports a micro SD card of up to 32GB limit although users report it supporting up to 128GB but hey we recommend you to stick with what the folks at Motorola say.

Other Hardware components include dual micro-SIM slots with 4G LTE support. Standard 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz) Wi-Fi and bluetooth 4.0 LE.

Let’s get less technical and talk about things that an average consumer looks for…

BATTERY

The new Moto G packs a 2470mAh battery which is already great and lasts easily a whole day with 5-6 hours of screen on time on average consumption but that’s not where the goodness stops. As the name suggests, it supports Motorola’s Turbo charge technology that claims to give up to 6 hours of use from 15minutes of charging and believe me I don’t know what they have done with their TurboPower tech but it’s actually really amazing and blazing fast.

CAMERA

The camera optics from the Moto G 3rd Gen makes a return that is a 13MP, phase detection auto focus f/2.0 aperture sensor that we initially saw in Nexus 6, a dual tone CCT LED flash, HDR, slow motion recording, video stabilization, burst mode, panorama, manual focus and exposure and other basic camera stuff. As for the front we have a 5MP f/2.2 aperture fixed focus lens.

 Latest Moto G offers
Both the cameras shoot 1080p Full HD video at 30FPS and the back camera is also capable of shooting 60FPS Slow-Motion video at 720p.
To be honest I have found this to be the best camera in this price range other competitors may come close but the quality with this guy is just great.

SOFTWARE

Last but definitely not the least is the software on this guy. It’s near stock android that comes with some cherry pick features from Motorola. The stock experience helps the device remain smooth throughout the OS, there are absolutely no hiccups or stutter whatsoever. Talking about the special features we see the quick Motorola gestures like double chop to turn on the flash light, double twist to open the camera and the standard Moto display feature that gives you the time and notifications at a glance whenever you pick up your device.

Final Verdict

Overall to be frank I really love this phone and it’s definitely my go to pick for the budget smartphone lineup. Also, with the smooth and sturdy experience and regular software updates, and don’t forget the water and dust resistance, it makes up for a great bang for the buck. I would really recommend you buying this phone if looking for a budget mid-range smartphone. You will be happy…
