Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of late\u00a0Captain Mandeep Singh who was\u00a0one of the seven personnel killed after a Rashtriya Rifle camp was attacked by militants in Jammu and Kashmir on 6 August 1999<\/strong>, when Gurmehar was two years old. The 20-year-old from Jalandhar who is studying English literature at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, had shot to national fame when she was trolled online for speaking up against violence allegedly by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), student affiliate of ruling BJP, at Delhi University\u2019s Ramjas College in February.<\/p>\n

Gurmehar\u00a0was trolled and branded as an “anti-national”for her video in which she was seen holding a placard with text written over it, which read ” Pakistan Did Not Killed My Dad War Killed Him<\/strong>“. After that\u00a0she was threatened with rape and murder by internet goons to the extent that she had to leave Delhi for a while.\u00a0Despite being at the center of the controversy, she refused to be silent.\u00a0US-based magazine Time has selected student and peace activist\u00a0Gurmehar Kaur\u00a0as one of its 10 \u2018Next Generation Leaders\u2019 for 2017, hailing her as a \u201cfree-speech warrior\u201d. <\/strong>Let’s know more about this pure fighter soul in the interview down below.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0<\/span>First major question, tell us about your views regarding the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2018anti-nationalist \u2018 tag that had been added to your name after your most viral video \u00a0<\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span>soldier of peace\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n
I find it absolutely ridiculous so I don’t pay \u00a0any heed to it. Plus this tag says more about the person tagging me with than it does about me, since when had peace become anti-nation?<\/span><\/div>\n

2.\u00a0<\/span>Do you feel that our society still lags behind in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cfreedom of speech \u201c?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Clearly not, because if you go online and dig a little deeper the whole society is out there using their freedoms of expression to abuse, hurt and bully people. What we really lag behind in is the understanding of freedom of expression and understanding the difference between critiquing and abusing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

3.\u00a0<\/span>According to the media you had received various death and rape threats after the campaign, is it true? If yes, did\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you regret taking such a bold step or did these threats made stronger to go further?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The threats were on social media for the world to see, so yes it’s true. I don’t regret it, what I really regretted was sitting in my bed\u00a06 months later<\/span><\/span>\u00a0going through all the horrible news that there is, of violence, of lynching and then feeling guilty for not speaking up when I should have. The guilt would’ve been much worse than any threat.<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to pursue law or public policy.\u00a0 I need to educate myself before coming to a decision of whether to join politics or not, we anyway have a lot of uneducated politicians, not sure if I would join politics but even if I did, I’d like to be different than them.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

6.\u00a0<\/span>How are you planning to change the mentalities and removing the negativities from our society? Are you satisfied with the influence you are creating on people right now?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n
