How MarkUs Society, Hansraj College organized Internship Fair to provide better career opportunities to Students

MarkUs, The Marketing Society and Placement Cell of Hansraj College successfully organized this year’s biggest Internship Fair! With 46 companies overboard and a gleaming crowd of more than a thousand students, the fair not only provided a platform for the students to interact with the representatives from different companies but also bag their dream internship.

The event was inaugurated by the principal of Hansraj College- Dr. Rama. Every company was given a separate kiosk. Students from all over Delhi University and other Universities came, talked to the representatives and applied in the companies that best suited their interests. The list of the candidates shortlisted by the companies for the interviews was time to time updated on the notice boards. This was followed by the interviews that took place in various rooms at Hansraj College’s campus. Many students were successfully recruited by the companies. Some big names including Outlook, IDBI federal life insurance, LIC,Oyo rooms and many more made the event bigger and better.

“It was very well organized” said the HR manager from Smaaash.

“I got my very first internship” said a student from ARSD College.

“The organizers were really helpful and such a fair is a great concept” said another girl from Miranda House.

Q1) What is the core team size and structure of this internship fair team?

The core team includes of seven members. The whole marketing society was involved in the organizing so the internship team had core team members, respective team heads and members.

There are four different teams – Creative, Organizing and Sponsorship, Technical and Research and Editorial.

Q2) For how long you start working and planning for internship fest ? What are the key focus areas in planning?

The idea for organizing the internship fair came in October. We wanted to do something big and resourceful. Internship Fair was the best option which we thought could fulfil the needs of the students. Proper planning started from December mid onwards. Key focus areas in planning involve the structure of the fair, shortcomings of the fairs held before, the target companies and how to pitch them.

Q3) Which are the major cities or colleges you targeted the audience from?

Colleges in and around Delhi are our primary targets. Proper planning about managing crowds and putting ourselves in place of students coming we get a fair idea about the problems the students are expected to face and thus efforts are made to curb all the problems.

Q4) What are the new initiatives you have taken in this fest for this year i.e. 2017?

Value for time – We sought to ensure that students get maximum benefit for their time spent in the fair. This we thought was missing in the fairs held before. There was no feeling of a fair as there were not many options available for students. Initiatives taken for this were:

  • 40+ companies so that students have ample opportunities to explore their area of interest
  • Dividing companies into 2 tiers and putting restrictions on the number of companies a student can apply so that fair and equal opportunities are given to all
  • Hospitality of the organisations visiting.

Q5) Which are the brands and companies you are inviting for internship fest 2017?

One of our key belief was to try and bring on board companies from different sectors. While our aim was to bring more and more big brands on campus but upcoming start-ups were also our area of target as being part of upcoming start-ups is an unforgettable experience. The big brands that were on campus were: IDBI Fedral Life Insurance, LIC, OYO Rooms, Outlook India, VLCC, Magicpin, Smaaash.

Q6) Share some experience and learning which helped you the most during execution of your fest.

Application of concepts of management. Planning, organizing, directing, staffing and controlling. All the elements come into play and there is no better practical learning of the management than this.

Q7) Tell us about your Post Fest Grand treat. How do you celebrate it?

The level of satisfaction after successfully organizing a fest of this grandeur is one beyond words. For the post fest treat, the members gathered at a lounge and had a good time with their dancing shoes on (and obviously some empty stomachs)

Q8) Tell us about your style of leadership to manage such a huge team.

To manage such a huge team requires democratic style of leadership. Delegation of work is the key to ensure that no work is left. Also you got to have faith in the abilities of the team members and got to give them confidence and required support. We need to help them acclimatize with the society atmosphere and beliefs so that they are free in giving their inputs for the organisation of the fest.

Q9) What are some tips/suggestions you would like to share to the students who are passionate in managing any event/fest in colleges.

Quality is all that matters! Your first priority should be to organize an event that is of highest quality and students benefit from that. Crowd pulling events seem to indicate success but the real success is value addition you create and the number of students that benefits from it.
